Owing to its rapid growth and international recognition, the Khachaturian International Competition became a member of the Geneva-based World Federation of International Musical Competitions (WFIMC) in 2013. This is a prestigious musical family which hosts, among other reputable competitions, the Queen Elisabeth Competition, the Montreal International Music Competition, the Tchaikovsky International Competition, etc. With a rich history spanning 16 years, the competition has expanded the geography of the participating countries, including Russia and other CIS republics, USA, Canada, Mexico, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Belgium, Great Britain, China, etc. The annual international competition is implemented owing to the joint efforts by the Ministry of Culture of Armenia, Yerevan Komitas State Conservatory and “Aram Khachaturian-competition” Cultural Foundation. Headed since 2008 by the composer, Honored Artist and then Ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary of Armenia to Russia Armen Smbatyan, the Board of Trustees of the foundation includes remarkable people of art and culture, including Jonathan Freeman-Attwood, Reinhart von Gutzeit, Pavel Kogan, Elizbieta Penderecka, Alexander Sokolov, Alexander Tchaikovsky, Mark Zilberquit, Constantine Orbelian and others.
